If longer is fine and you want internet, gas stations, and quick Route 2 access - Montague (the overarching town that includes the factory villages of Millers and Turners Falls) and Greenfield are great though not so backwoods as the towns you first listed. They’re the central towns of the county, downright “urban” (lol). Gill and Northfield are two incredibly scenic agricultural / woodsy hamlets also fairly close to services and Route 2. Warwick and Wendell are about as remote as the sasquatch forest gets in this part of MA (or anywhere really) and great if that’s what you’re looking for, just need to be prepared!
Socially, the two towns couldn't be more different. New Salem is more conservative redneck. Wendell is an old hippie town, maybe trust fund hippies these days.
Wendell has a town motto: " We're all here because we're not all there." If Orange had a motto it would be along the lines of how to cook road kill.
Orange may not have a motto, but it does have a nickname: Friendly Town. I'll be visiting there today.
