We are considering moving to Ayer, MA and interested in any opinions from people who currently live or have lived there. What is the community like? It seems a little "rough around the edges" but we've heard that it is "up-and-coming" with the possibility of some big employers moving into the old Devens facility.

All opinions (both positive and negative) appreciated.

It has something of a lively little downtown with a few nice places to eat. The old Devens property provides some nice green space for community events. It hosted "The Nines" music festival back in August.

I was there by chance last year and was surprised by the liveliness of the downtown. The presence of a commuter rail stop is a good thing too. I think it has good potential to see a continued upswing because of its location and access to public transit, but this is just based on one visit.

I have sen a slow trickle of people who work off the Red Line moving to Ayer. Intrigued to see how that continues.

As new building land becomes less and less in the suburbs right outside the 128 belt, places like Ayer r becoming more
popular. Having the commuter rail is a huge plus and the Devens property is supposed to become a place for new
development..business..
I've never spent much time there, but it's an up and coming area for sure..

Like I've said before, it's these darned suburbanites leaving their doors unlocked at night and letting the zombies in.

Piqued by the updated posts to this thread, I looked at the Ayer listings right now: they are way expensive, and the property taxes are much higher than in Eastern Mass. Perhaps the town is still paying for the commuter train.

I'll keep looking there, but there are still communities in the So. Shore (as I define it, anyway) that are cheaper than Ayer.

Ayer is in a beautiful part of Mass, though. I will keep looking. They had a handful of properties under $300,000 yesterday on Trulia. Two, if I remember rightly; I was surfing around.

I want a small house; would consider under 1000 sf, around or under $250,000. I don't want a mortgage. I won't buy something unless I have the cash to pay for it.

Are we looking at the same MLS? 8 out of the 20 properties for sale in Ayer are under $250k, which puts the median price in town at slightly over $250k. VERY affordable for MA standards. One in particular looks like it's right up your alley: a cleanly updated 3/2 Cape with 1300 sf for $215k and the property taxes are only $2700. The next listing is a 3/2 ranch with 1300 sf for $235k and has nicer updates (granite, central air) and property taxes are only $2500. Those taxes are mind-boggling low!
