Mass reputation for high taxes has faded with time. In the 80's sure but not now. Now it could be argued that much of the country raised theirs and we didn't..etc.
Had we not passed prop 2 1/2 things would be different. We also have a flat income tax. The lack of county government kinda helped with sales taxes. I hear combined in CA it can easily get to 10%!
I don't mind taxes but I rather have them in ways that make sense as part of policy. Some changes are still needed. I rather see a federal estate tax come back rather than millionaires tax. I don't think we need sales taxes on used goods. I rather see taxes on ownership rather than income because frankly people can choose to not work after awhile and not pay.
Weather is a factor and I think some of the older housing stock is not meant for aging in place.
Traditionally, people from the Northeast retired to the east coast of FL, and people from the Midwest retired to the west coast of FL. Naples seems to have more recently pulled from the northeast as well, but it has gotten relatively expensive.
Ocala, FL, seems to be pulling the insane folks from all over the country.
My in-laws were in Ocala for about 20 years - well just outside of Ocala in the county. I never saw anything insane. It seemed like a pretty boring place to live.

There are a number of cities in LA County where the sales tax is 10.25% and the voters decided to impose 3.25% of that via a ballot initiative to fund transportation improvements.
You can find sales tax rates of over 9% in many of the mid-south states like TN, AR, AL, and LA.

The other part is mass doesn't tax food and clothing (most). Yes there's a meals tax and sometimes debates of what is food vs a meal (microwaved burrito at 711 ) . You don't have to tax food.
As long as you have a decent control over taxing and spending things should be ok. Sometimes other states have a higher dependency on given industries (i.e. hospitality) look at Florida with Disney. 60,000 people employed. I'd argue without them Florida might have had an income tax.

Doesn't the Ocala area have a lot of horse farms and training facilities?

If Florida didn't have a big tourist trade paying 6% on meals, lodging, and tchotchkes, they would definitely have an income tax. Also, corporations pay a 5.5% income tax - the Mouse and Comcast pour a lot of money into Florida's coffers.
Not accurate at all. Naples/East Naples has long been a retirement destination for Boston people, to the point of where the term "Boston South" has been coined in reference to it. Lots of New Englanders in Fort Meyers, Sarasota, Northport, etc.

NJ/NYers go towards Miami.
Ok, yeah, I remember going to see the Red Sox at their what was then a state of the art, brand new Spring Training facility which was somewhere near Naples. Perhaps that was part of the draw. But the Tampa/St. Pete area has a lot of Chicagoans and folks from other large cities in the midwest. (Although a large number of Chicagoans also head out to AZ.)
