I don't disagree with that.

My wife and I are friends with a couple that built a new construction 3000sf home and had 1 kid. Upon deciding to have a 2nd child, they immediately put their home up for sale and bought a 4000sf new construction citing "space" as the driving factor. My wife and I kinda looked at each other like

But you are right. Different needs/wants I guess.

When I was tutoring a Cambodian family in survival English, they lived in a two-room plus kitchen/bath in Brighton. The woman and her two kids in one room, a family of four in the other. Not saying it's an ideal thing, but that it's a real thing.

Oh i'm sure of it. I could share a few other tales, but I don't want to derail the thread too much.

In the couple's defense, they have the income to support such a decision.

What's being described here are suboptimal living situations. I don't get it.

"You don't have to suffer and comprise, but you ought to do it here" Am I missing something?

Either way it's reality.

I think that's part of the issue is that many think it's just something poor people do.

It is, largely because modern high income/education households are averaging ~1.6 births. Aside of studio apartments, almost any housing stock satisfies one bed per room with those birth rates.

This was certainly not the case when birth rates were higher. It's also not the case in modern day Utah.
