We have friends who live in Medfield. They really wanted Needham or Newton but couldn't afford it at the time, so they've been in Medfield for years and are content. BUT, they would never take a job downtown or in Cambridge. They occasionally go to Boston but almost never go to Cambridge.

For Cambridge, I'd probably look around the Rte 2 corridor and the train lines out that way.

If one of you needs to get to Cambridge then as others have said, it would make the most sense to live along RT2. Newton is also a pretty easy commute to Cambridge but it sounds like that town wouldn't be a good fit for what you've described you're looking for.

Weston would also be a good choice but Weston is expensive. So whether or not that's a good fit is going to depend on how high your budget goes.

Otherwise as others have already said, it would probably be best to focus on towns along RT2 like Concord, Lincoln, Lexington (might be too dense for your taste), Bedford, etc.

My brother-in-law pre-COVID commuted to Cambridge from Medfield (he's currently WFH). He's always said the commute is AWFUL. Medfield is not the most convenient town to commute to downtown either. There's not great highway access and no public transportation in town. Unless your commute is more local, I would avoid Medfield. For example, I've worked with several folks who work at Olin College who have elected to buy in Medfield. It's a great town with a lot going for it but an easy commute to Boston or Cambridge is not among them.
