Hi all,

I have a question about permits in Reading, MA.

We are buying a house in Reading and would like to do some work on it before moving in. Does anyone have any idea how long it takes to get a permit to do e.g. electrical work in practice? The website says they guarantee an answer (accept or decline) within 30 days, but I'm wondering how long this takes in practice.

Thanks!

Do you already have an electrician or electrical contractor lined up to do the work? They will generally pull any required electrical permits and can answer this question.

I haven't been hearing lately about permitting causing delays. All the town building inspectors are back to work at this point although in many towns some of the administrative folks who work in the building department are working remotely from home.

Likely, the more significant bottlenecks in the process will be the contractor's ability to secure materials and the availability of the contractor. Many people are improving their homes right now and there can be a long wait to get someone over to your house.
