Howdy All.
I am a Texan who is tired of the size and alienation of Houston. I've lived in Houston all my life, and have found it not all that appealing in recent years. The traffic, the lack of adequate public transportation, school systems (Future English Teacher), and a variety of things.
(Lack of Seasons, Lack of history and a defined culture, ect).
Myself, my best friend since I was 10, and another good friend of ours are thinking of moving to Massachusetts.
Here is the Skinny:
We're looking for affordable apartments/ect in the 1700 dollar range for a 3 bedroom. (Though willing to do a two bedroom for around if needed, and higher for Heat included). Car is something we'd like to take with us, because of Summers off and such.
Its a weird situation, and we're going to go communistic/Hippy about the whole thing, paying our way together. (Rent/Food/Utilities/ct.) from a central fund.
So here's what I guess the whole thing is about :
Which kind of areas are ideal for this kind of move?
We don't want to get stuck in a run down area, or "slums" like we have in Houston.
Quincy was mentioned to me by a transplant at my job, and I've been looking into that area, (Southies I think they're called).
I'm interested in experiences, opinions, tips, tricks, tactics about any facet of this endeavor as well. (I'm the planner, and I'm planning earrrrrly).
Thanks.

I have lived in both the Dallas Forth Worth area and near Boston. They don't often say Howdy in Mass, nor does Ya'll come off very well either. In fact I found them to be a conversation stopper if your talking to locals.
Good luck with your move.

"Southie" is the nickname for the Boston neighborhood known officially as South Boston. During the city's cross-district school busing ugliness in the '70s, hordes of its residents bailed out for the South Shore cities of Quincy, Braintree, and Weymouth as well as to towns beyond. Now Quincy itself is evolving into a considerably more "diverse" city. Some neighborhoods on its north side have a large, in some cases even majority, Asian/Asian-American population. There's beginning to be a visible AA presence in a place that was loudly and violently racist not too long ago. But by and large it persists as a mostly working-class and Irish-American community. The sections I like best are Wollaston, Adams Shore, and Squantum.
But I'm inclined to suggest a more suburban area, where you stand the possibility of renting an actual house instead of a condo or apartment. Arlington, Watertown, and Norwood - in that order - came to mind first. They're all not far from Boston; the first two border Cambridge, and Arlington also adjoins Somerville. Around here, the outlying communities "roll up the sidewalks" by 9 PM seven days a week. Boston and Cambridge and Somerville are the "happening" places: shopping, night life, all that good stuff. Our much-maligned but fairly reliable public transportation system, see mbta.com , serves Arlington with bus lines (and the Red Line subway terminal just inside the Cambridge boundary), Watertown with buses and a "trackless trolley" route, and Norwood with buses and commuter rail. With gas prices beyond four bucks a gallon and insurance rates getting no lower, you're well advised to set up housekeeping close to the "T."
I see the guilt-tripping over accent and speech already getting started. Feh on that. I'm a transplanted Midwesterner raised by parents from the South, and a New England resident for nearly three decades, so have had all sorts of influences on how I speak and sound. I talk based on how I feel. Sometimes my greeting to you might be, "Hi," other times it might well be "Howdy," most often it's a slightly drawn-out "Hey." I regularly use "y'all" when addressing a group of people, since it honors my heritage. Besides that, a "guy" is male - what's up with "you guys" even when no guy is in the group? Never understood that one, lol. If I were president, the first law I'd sign would ban those "voice coaches" who train a person to squash their twang and abandon "non-standard" words and phrases. There's more than enough homogenization going on in this nation of ours as it is. I see no need to kill off distinctions in the way we talk to make it worse. That you can make yourself understood should be all that matters. All the same, whatever you do, if you throw "like" into a sentence where it doesn't belong and end that sentence as though it were a question when it's not, CUT IT OUT. "Y'know what I'm sayin?" has got to go too. Other than that, rock the drawl, sister. Own it with pride - and know that a lot of potential dates are likely to find it "hot."

Heh.
Heh. We're a bunch of guys. But I think you're right. People talk to people regardless of twang, drawl or accent. If I was rude to everyone who talked funny, I'd be pretty damn lonely. That and despite being from Texas, none of us sound like we lived here. Something about being raised in a City changes vocal speech patterns and accents.
goyguy: Thanks for the words of encouragement, and the ideas of where to scout out locations. I dunno if an actual house would be within our price range, but it might be something to look into as well. Nightlife isn't so much an issue as none of us are the type that patron night clubs or bars that often. (We're a bunch of socially graceful geeks, I know unheard of right?)
Thanks for the info, I'll start looking around and start getting ideas. More tips and advice are always welcome.

I agree with all of this, and also would put a plug in Belmont on the Watertown line.
Arlington (home sweet home) is basically a dry town-there is a nice selection of restaurants that have opened in recent years, and now a few of them have liquor licenses, but there are no bars or nightlife; you'd have to go to Somerville or Cambridge. Same for Belmont, but if you live in Belmont on the Watertown line there are places to go. Conley's, for example, is a couple minutes' walk from our place. Like Watertown, the SE section of Belmont has much more affordable apts than Boston and Cambridge, and bigger and nicer too. Also easy to keep a car, almost always parking included. The 73 (on the town line) and 71 (in Watertown along Mt. Auburn St) buses are about 15 mins to Harvard Sq (where you can also go out), and you can get the Red Line there and have access to Boston. What you'll find is a lot of two- or three-family houses, where you live in a house as opposed to apt. bldg or complex, but you share the house. It's a fairly quiet area so that is usually not a problem.
Here are a couple of ads in my vicinity:
1/2Fee. Spacious first floor 3br - 1 block bus Harvard - Avl now/AUG 1 (http://boston.craigslist.org/bmw/fee/742870521.html - broken link)
Modern, great kitchen, parking, laundry, East Watertown, 1/2 fee (http://boston.craigslist.org/bmw/fee/739137500.html - broken link)

Wherever you might choose in MA, commuting is likely to be a bear. So I would strongly recommend figuring out what you want to be doing, and then choosing the best location. I am out in Western MA, where you would have a lot of company in the 'going communistic' line of work. Most of MA is more expensive, but with much better work opportunities.
If work is less important than getting with the right scene and the right folks for you to feel at home, let that drive your decision for where to go. Because if you need to be doing a lot of commuting between home, work, and social life Massachusetts will get pretty old pretty quick.

Well, we just want a place that would offer a variety of jobs. Which is why honestly I'll be looking at cities along the commuter rails, or with decent public transportation. In Texas, our Public Transportation is a joke. We plan on taking a car because being in a new area without one does kinda ....well blow.
So honestly Job availibility is a bit more interesting than local and right scene. We will only be worried about surviving and making sure we are bringing in money than going out and partying or pubbing.

"Hey" - sorry 'bout the gender confusion earlier. LOL!
Just about any of the "inner ring" suburbs, no matter the direction from the city, would be most workable for "you guys." You'd have the convenience to transpo mixed in with being able to kick back at home amid quiet surroundings.
The job market for secondary and college-level educators is strong here. Lots n' lots o' teachers are aging out or taking early retirement. At the same time, the population of under-18's is in a growth pattern. Being situated within ten miles of the city would be ideal. Most job opportunities will be in suburban or "charter" schools. Google the Massachusetts Teachers Association for "inside" tips on what might be available for September. State certification would need to come first - is that being worked toward?
Add Medford (particularly the West Medford and Medford Hillside sections), Dedham, Waltham, and Malden to the list of close-in cities and towns already brought up. All have a varied and affordable selection of housing, MBTA access, and quiet and safe neighborhoods.
Once you've landed new digs and are at least partly moved in, hook up a keg of Lone Star and make a big ol' batch of Texas chili and/or tacos. Invite all the neighbors over for some good times on one of these hot summer nights. Then you can revert to what may be your more customary reclusive natures - the main thing is to start off on the right foot with your abutters. After that, you'll at least know who you're passing on the street and the feeling will be positive, even if that's as far as it gets. Work the TX angle for all its worth, just try to stay away from being caricatures in cowboy hats and boots (LOL.)
What I wrote before about retaining and rockin' the drawl still holds true, brother .

about accents-just my 2 cents. I was born in Washington DC- parents where from Pittsburgh PA- another linguistically 'interesting area' with a unique way of using words.
I moved to Connecticut when I was 6- well that's now 5 decades ago. I had a conversation with a native Bostonian on the phone with what I feel was a rather 'effected' accent. When I told them of my geographic 'origins' they said I sounded 'like that'..... well since I have lived here all my life almost- that assumption to say the least was snobbish- in any case I have a pretty neutral accent anyway. I talk fast- which is typical here- and by now have a slight New England dialect. I decided not to meet that person by the way.

I suggest this thought experiment: how will you feel when you have to spend a long time shoveling snow or chipping ice to allow you to move your car to get to work on a cold morning?
How about when it happens repeatedly?
The answer to these questions will tell you a lot about how you will think about a move from TX to MA.
