If you had to rank these towns based on town reputation, school system, community/recreation - what would be your first choice, second, etc. for these three towns?

Depending upon how close you want to be to the train/Rte 128, I'd put Westwood and Medfield as #1 and Sudbury after that.

I would put Sudbury first, then Westwood, then Medfield for schools.

If you go by Boston Magazine's ranking of the best schools available here: Public Schools Chart - Boston Magazine (http://www.bostonmagazine.com/boston/public2009 - broken link)
then macromom is correct.

But look closer at the data. The differences between the three in terms of test scores is quite small and, mathmatecially speaking, probably not statistically significant. All three offer what are, by any measure, excellent public schools that are amongst the best in the state and the nation.

Based on school rankings plus what I've heard from friends & clients about the Sudbury schools over the years, I'd put that first. Actually we were at a friend's house last night and she was raving about a particular teacher and a world studies class he had developed at Lincoln/Sudbury HS. There's a lot of social + recreational activities to participate in. They moved there from out of state several years ago & very quickly felt part of the community.

I completely agree, trying to find the best public schools is like trying to find the best college. Rankings can give you an idea of general position, but trying to decide between small differences is already in the noise. In other words, it's probably more worthwhile to make your decision based on something other than just schools, because the schools are all about the same.

I don't much about Sudbury, but I do know that both Medfield and Westwood are nice towns. Medfield is better if you like the more rural setting and Westwood is better if you work in Boston and want an easier commute. Beyond that the differences are probably small and will be more influenced on the particular neighborhood you choose, the neighbors you happen to live near, and the parents of your children's classmates you happen to meet.
