1. Main city data site: Frankly, I think the answers to a lot of the questions asked in the forum can be inferred from what you can read right here:

2. Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority - find the paths/stops of the subway (the "T") lines in Boston and adjacent communities, and of the commuter rail lines, which reach out into the suburbs. The commuter rail is awesome, and the subway, is well, a subway

3. Boston Globe real estate - can see house and rental ads. As far as the rentals go, many are not listed here, and I think you can do better than these ads on pricing if you're willing to really look, but this will give you *some* idea.

4. Google Maps - search by city/state, by zip code, or just pan around, zoom down and flip to satellite photo view to check out the neighborhood.

Also, If I'm moving or visiting somewhere, I always go to an image hosting website (eg.
Welcome to Flickr - Photo Sharing (http://www.flickr.com - broken link) ) and search the town I'm going to. These sites provides personal, non-commercial images that you can't find on a real estate ad.
