Here's a web site with all the towns in the Berkshires, with some info about most:

http://www.placenames.com/us/25003+2/ppl/

I lived over the hill, so to speak, in the Pioneer Valley, and often went to Berkshire towns for shopping, entertainment and just for the ride (on Rte 9).

One of the towns along the route between the valley and mountain(s) is Cummington (apparently not in the Berkshires proper) but one of my favourite towns along this path with mountains and water.

The Berkshire towns I know and have some familiarity with are very dense, and except for Williamstown, I never stayed in any so can't recall mountain views and flowing water.

But, if the Berkshires is what you want, I can only say I love it!

I've often thought about buying a small cabin out that way.

Most people seem to enjoy the lakes and mountains of NH and commercialism, tourism they bring with them. I never felt that was for me.

I have this romanticized image in my head of a simple cabin on a lake were I could escape from the modern wold. Read a little more. Not have to drive to see nature but be a part of it on a more daily basis.

I'm jealous of you really.

More directly to your question though. If you don't have ties to any one spot I would look into the pioneer valley area. I don't know how to say it except it feels better there, A little more open and free.

I've spent some but not a lot of time in the area. I'll try and come up with something more specific for you.

In the Pioneer Valley, you can find what you're looking for but at a price.

Cummington, which I mentioned on Rte 9 - mountains and river.

Up beyond Amherst, many of the towns meet these specifications. In particular places like Shutesbury.

I was just looking at some old posts regarding the general Western Massachusetts area, and realized that Franklin County is rarely mentioned.

You might want to check out some of the smaller towns in that area (just over the Hampshire County border); Turners Falls, MA, is beautiful and accessible.

Good luck!

Kripalu has a great message board; if you're community minded, that might be a good place to check. I thimk you will find a lot of like-minded people there. Where are you coming from?

Hi,
I'm living in Penn Wynne suburbs of Philly. I have lived in Agawam and worked in Springfield. That is not what I want. I do plan on checking out the message boards at Kripalu in May. Meanwhile I'm trying to sell my home here. How is Sunderland????

Update.
I've sold my home. I definetly need to find someplace to live in May. Does anybody know about Ashfield, MA? I do not plan to purchase a home, I will rent for a while.
