Question for Zoumai -- is there any way to attend the French immersion program in Milton without residing in Milton? Thanks.

Smile Milton French Immersion Program

I just discovered that Milton has a fantastic public school system, complete with a French immersion program. My son is currently a first grader and if we moved to Milton he would be entering second grade-- one year too late. Has anyone had experience moving into the milton french immersion program post-first grade? Any advice would be much appreciated. I visited milton and love it. Also - if anyone has advice about which of the schools would most likely be flexible working with him to catch him up in the French would be great.

Default looking for Zoomai

I saw that you were a teacher in the Milton system. I am wondering if you could answer a complex question for me? Are there procedures through which my first grader can enter the french immersion program one year late? He has experience with French and can go to French camp this summer to catch up with some of what he has missed in first grade. I would LOVE to enter for him to enter the immersion program. I am a French teacher myself.

I am not a French teacher, but my kids are in the French Immersion track at Milton public schools. They both really enjoy it, and I'm impressed with the program. If you want your child to enter the program in 2nd grade (typically the students must begin in 1st grade), you should go to the Milton Public Schools website and find someone to call with your questions. Probably someone who deals with curriculum at the schools. I've always found the administrative people at the MPS to be very helpful and pleasant to deal with.

Having learned a second language via immersion (kinda) myself, your son is no where near "late" for it. I've actually seen many statistics showing that it can be damaging to force a second language on somebody before the first one is mastered, but obviously you still want to start young. I wouldn't worry about it, do they offer other languages? Unless your french, when would you ever use it?

I would avoid the Milton Public schools. They've been gradually going down hill. There's no community support (which can be frustrating and draining). A few years ago the high nearly lost it's accreditation. If you want to the French Immersion program for elementary you should be prepared to send your children some where else afterwards.

As a teacher in the French immersion program, can you enroll your children without being a resident of the town? Also are your children subject to the lottery?
