From the US Government Veterans Affairs Website:

Q. Who decides if a government office or business closes or stays open on Veterans Day?
A. Federal government closings are established by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Generally, when a holiday falls on a non-workday -- Saturday or Sunday -- the federal government is closed on Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or Friday (if the holiday falls on Saturday). A complete schedule of Federal Government closings can be found on the Internet at http://www.opm.gov/oca/worksch/index.htm.

State and local governments, including schools, are not required to follow OPM closure policies and may determined for themselves whether to close or remain open. Likewise, non-government businesses are free to make their own decisions to close or remain open for business, regardless of federal, state or local government closings.

Then, I stand by my comment that Veteran's Day, Columbus Day, and Yom Kippur are not school "holidays" in other areas, and resent the inference that I am not sensitive to the sacrifices made by our military simply because I find it strange that it is a day off of school.

The correct inference from my comment, if are you seeking to make one, would be that the unusual days off corroborates with an assertion I have previously made that schools here seem less sensitive to the needs of lower-income or 2 wage earning families. Unusual days off, such as these, when the majority of other business remain open are a burden to families that may be unable to afford to take off or pay for alternative care. It makes things most difficult for those in society who are already at risk in areas of educational attainment and economic security.

but mostly... I expected people to read it as "toungue-in-cheek" - in line with the majority of my posts.

I'm did not presume, assume or infer anything- including that your comment was tongue in cheek. But thank you for telling me what you were trying to say.

In regard to "unusual days off", these holidays have been observed in Massachusetts since I was a child in school. School calendars are published early enough to give parents opportunity to make plans for their children's care on professional development days, vacations and holidays.

In regard to schools being less sensitive to the needs of working parents and 2 working family homes, your scope of knowledge is very limited. Sharon is not a community that I would characterize as "in tune" to the plight of the lower middle class. Your children will get an excellent education but there will be some tradeoffs.

I wasn't actually referring to myself, just to clarify.

And I enjoyed your 'politically correct' wording about Sharon. Wit is sadly underused and unappreciated in today's society, which is a shame since the internet is such fertile ground for expressing it.

Every public school system in Massachusetts closes for both Columbus Day and Veteran's Day. Even more unusual, for someone coming from out of state, is they close on Patriot's Day (in April) too!

Schools with large numbers of Jewish students (and faculty) close for TWO days on Rosh Hashanah (some only close on 1) and one day for Yom Kippur. Without a certain % of students in school, the town would not get state reimbursement money for that day. Also, it would be costly to higher subsitutes.

While still predominently Jewish, and home to a growing Orthodox community (that does not generally attend public schools), the fastest growing segment of the population is asian.

My aunt and uncle lived in Sharon with their kids, and they were Catholic. I hate to say it, but there were times they felt excluded. However, I think they fared well overall, and the schools are good. Both of their kids went on to a four-year college and are now leading very successful lives.

Yes the people of Sharon are very friendly. We have worked on 5 or 6 homes recently and the clients were welcoming and had no issues with religious tones to them at all. Nice town with decent people.

I lived in Sharon, MA. for a good 5 years, but it was a long time ago, in fact, it was during the 80's & I was in my early 20's. You'll probably get a kick out of this one but I had NO idea it was a Jewish community and I'm Catholic! I found out it was one of the biggest Jewish communities around right before I moved closer to Boston! So there you go, that shows you how it was for me any way living there! Didn't even notice until I was just about ready to wrap it up with living there! Too funny....Oh you'll really like it there. I was living over on the Bay Road side of the town. It was beyond Crescent Ridge Dairy Bar. The BEST ice cream around....now that's one thing I miss about living near there, yum! It's a great town, you're going to really like living there and it's so easy to get in to Boston from there, no problem at all...it always had exceptionally good schools thru the years, there's no problems at all that way, it's a town that always had a really good reputation too.

Best wishes living there!
