I have family in West Roxbury - it's a beautiful area over there by the Commuter Rail. West Roxbury has a great little "downtown" feel on it's Centre St. I don't think crime is too bad over on that side of West Roxbury. My husband's grandmother lives right there and she never mentions crime or whatnot. It's probably mostly just teenage punks doing whatever it is they do. But again, I don't know as I don't live there.

The Lynden School is K-8 and I believe that school would service that area. From what my husband and I gathered from researching schools in our home search a few years back, that school is pretty decent for Boston Public Schools. If you were considering private schools, St. Teresa's is right there in the center. Popular private choices for high school are Catholic Memorial (boys) and St. Joe's in Brighton (girls). There are a lot of activities for young kids to do (little league, hockey rink, etc.)

We really like West Roxbury. It was too pricey for us when we went to buy (as were most communities! ) Having kids made us cautious too because of the school system in Boston. If we had mad cash stashed away for private schools, I'd move there in a heartbeat. Especially in the area you were asking about. I think that area is beautiful. Just my opinion. Good luck.

Overall that's a nice area. The main crime concerns are personal property (ie car theft and burglary), and teenage loitering/vandalism. Much of the property crime is facilitated by residents not considering it necessary to lock cars or house doors. That is probably a good indication about the overall crime perception, and also a good pointer on how to avoid the main problem.

The schools in Westy are very good. The Lyndon is a pilot school (similar to charter but still operates within the district). As such, it may not be so easy to get a space, but the other schools are all good, too. Overall, Boston Public Schools suffer a bit from a reputation that is outdated. The elementary schools are mostly quite good (I have two kids in a public school in neighboring Roslindale), and some of the highschools (ie Boston Latin) are among the very best in the country.
