In my experience Meth has been more damaging than anything. We have had friends and relatives affected by drug abuse of all shades over the years, and by far and away, Meth has been the worst. Meth destroys the mind and body at such an alarming rate. A friend of mine and his wife went to a Labor Day BBQ/camping trip a couple weeks ago, and there was a guest there who was going " a million miles an hour, all day! Nobody could keep up!" and didn't seem to sleep. The next morning, my friend's camera was missing, among other things... I told him, Welcome to the world of meth. He had never met someone like that. It is an ugly ugly drug.

goyguy: I agree about alcohol. Fortunately it is a drug that it is also capable for many people to use without a negative effect.

You might see old alcoholics.
I think, roughly, you get 20+ years of abusing alcohol. Maybe 5-10 of opiates. Speeds and stimulens, under five years, and measure meth in months (maybe up to two years).
Jail, insanity, or death. The AA folks have that right.

Heroin is supposedly a big problem where I live on the South Shore. It was even featured on the show Intervention. However, I've never seen it first hand and despite hearing about how rampant it is haven't had any issues with people in the area.
