Is anybody else unable and unwilling to wear regular men's dress socks -- instead, demanding over-the-calf (long) dress socks?

Problem: over-the-calf socks are hard to find; usually, a store has none.

I used to find them at Target in recent years, but not always. Now I never see them there. Walmart has them, but they're nylon (I prefer some cotton in the mix). Milton's at South Shore Plaza had none.

Johnston & Murphy sells them, but at high cost. Plus, the socks don't rise high enough. The socks need to rise high enough AND have a good elastic to keep them up.

I dislike regular socks, both the feel and the exposure of skin if I cross my leg. And it looks silly if someone sees skin while you're wearing a suit.

I haven't checked Sym's, Joseph A. Bank, Brooks Bros,, Filene's Basement or Lord & Taylor -- or online. It shouldn't take this effort! Marshall's and T.J. Maxx don't carry them.

Oh, I recently discovered an acceptable pair at Sears

Thanks for not laughing at this weird request.

I'd try Filene's Basement on Boylston and if that fails Lord and Taylor across the street. I always see those gold toe as well as Kenneth Cole etc brands piles up in the shoe section.

American Apparel has over-the-calf socks in many, many colors. They're on Newbury and in Harvard Square, with the most selection in their online store.

Interesting question in that I just bought my husband several pairs of black over-the-calf socks (wool blend) today at Macy's!, Gold-Toe brand. ($24 for 3 pair less 25% sale price, less another 25% off with coupon.)

I used to go through this with ladies stockings. I hate those mid calf socks. Kohls had the best selection.

Try SierraTradingPost.com. And look at the clearance section, many good deals there. I just got a few swanky (and very high quality) pairs of amazingly great over the calf dress socks - made in Germany, great material, and a great fit. On sale for $7.50/pair. There are plenty of other options. In terms of brick and mortar places, I've had ok luck at TJ Maxx - much lesser quality though and it's very hit or miss so can be frustrating. As I get older and have less time on my hands and a little more money, I gravitate more towards higher quality stuff - lasts longer, feels better, and is less of a headache. But there's tons of stuff that's overpriced - they price things high for the illusion of quality and it just doesn't live up. If I find something better and it's priced fairly (i.e. higher but not exorbitant), I'll go for it.

I don't think it's a weird post, good socks help you feel better put together. I feel like a schlub if my socks sag.
