We are looking to build a new home in Essex or Middlesex county. We are thinking of something between 2500 and 3000 sq. feet. Does anyone know what the average cost per sq. foot to build a new construction home in Massachusetts (essex/ middlesex county)?
We are thinking a contemporary colonial.

thanks

Essex County might well be more expensive than Middlesex, given that there are many horsey/seaside towns up that way.
I built a new house in Middlesex County in 2001. It ran about $225/sq.ft. It was a bit more per sq.ft. because I built a small custom contemporary house, and the base costs were the same as they'd be for a larger house. I built about 1250 sq.ft.
I think roughly $200/sq.ft. would be a likely average, if not a little low.
Also, consider whether or not you'll need to install a septic system or if there is a hookup to town sewer. The septic requirements are extremely expensive. Mine cost about $30K to come close to the requirements for new construction.
But to have my dream house, and even more than I could have ever hoped... It's a real joy. Good luck.

If you're looking for a builder in the metrowest, Tom Perna is excellent: 781-953-8855. Not a big time builder - he does one home at a time. He's done work in Hopkinton that is beautiful and very nice quality.
