Sutton or Oxford could work, perhaps Douglas.

I wouldn't venture too far west or especially northwest of Worcester - unless you want a lengthy commute.

Personal opinion: living west of Worcester and commuting to Framingham isn't reasonable. You should try to find a little place between the two places, like Upton, Uxbridge, Northbridge, or even Ashland. You might be able to find a house at your price point in those towns.

Used to do a Shrewsbury-Framingham commute very easily (Rte. 9 right into Framingham). At the time it was 30 minutes, but probably more these days, due to heavier traffic.

When I moved to Worcester (near Park Ave) it added a good 20 minutes to the commute. Moral of the story-it's hard to gauge just from the distance on the map...it can be deceptive.

2. We're looking for ruralish affordable towns with decent school systems (we have one year olds, so not an immediate need, but will be)...any recommendations for good towns to look within say a 35 mile radius of Framingham?
Thanks!
1) I live in Worcester and commuted to Framingham for a while and it wasn't bad at all. I took 290 to 495 South to 90 East and got there in about 25-30 minutes. I tried taking Route 9 a few times but the lights and congestion make for a longer ride even though the mileage is a little shorter taking this route from where I live.

2) I don't know much about the communities west of Worcester but I know some people who live in Auburn who seem to like it. Millbury seems to be decent too.

I live in Hudson and as far as commute, family and kids it's great. Not sure if you'd find what you want in your price range, and it's not rurual. Berlin and Bolton are right next door and much more rural. If you find something in your price range, it will need a lot of work.

Grafton and Uxbridge might work for you, but depending where you live in town will greatly affect your commuting time.
