Running With Scissors is non-fiction, supposedly. Here's a novel that might suffice: The Man Who Owned Vermont; it's set in Northampton. There's a sequel, too, but I forget its name.

The sequel is called A Stranger's House, and both are by Bret Lott.

In addition to House (which I own), Tracy Kidder also wrote Home Town which is about Northampton and also Among Schoolchildren which is a sad book about a poor school in Holyoke. It was very good, though.

Tracy Kidder, author of House, also wrote Home Town, about Northampton. Both nonfiction but engaging.

Oops-- I missed in_newengland's post.

Archer Mayor writes mystery noir set in Brattleboro, VT, which is pretty much still in the Pioneer Valley. Some would argue the most interesting slice of the Connecticut River valley to inhabit.

Already mentioned. Also the Unredeemed Captive, about his sister. Both are about early settlers captured by the Indians in the raid of 1704. But it IS worth mentioning again.
