I think it depends on a lot of factors:

- Where will you be working and what's your tolerance for commute time? Do you need access to public transportation or will you be driving?

- What type of community are you looking for? (City/suburb/rural)

- Budget - Home prices vary quite a bit across the state

are you going to be living in Boston? if so, and if your daughter is pretty smart, have her take the ISEE to see if she will test into one the exam schools in Boston. IMHO, the exam schools are the best of the Boston Public Schools. there are 3 of them: Boston Latin School, Boston Latin Academy, and the O'Bryant School of Math and Science. there are some decent charter schools in the city (though I know nothing about them).

a lot of the inner city schools have problems: low MCAS scores, drugs, violence, and high drop out rates (related to the low MCAS scores). a lot of the worst performing schools have been are will soon be restructured into smaller schools in hopes to increase test scores.

for outside Boston, the best schools tend to be in the most expensive suburbs. Newton and Brookline have excellent high schools, but cost of living there is HIGH!
