How is the commute from Norwood to Longwood Medical Area (public transit) and is it a safe, family-friendly neighborhood?

I'd say it's safe and family-friendly. I've never felt the least bit concerned for my safety walking through Norwood. There are towns with more highly-rated schools, but they're generally more expensive or further away. Norwood has a pretty nice center with some good restaurants and plenty of shopping.

Commuting is pretty easy, but you'll have to make at least one transfer which will increase your travel time and could lead to frustration. I take the same train line and transfer to the Red Line, so I do know the commuter rail has become pretty reliable and is a relatively comfortable way to travel. I'd guess you'd average about an hour commute each way, maybe less on the way there and probably a bit more on the way back. If you can afford it, a commute from Brookline or Newton would be a lot easier, but those are both considerably more expensive towns.

South Norwood isn't that great, but in other areas you should be fine.
