My husband may be working in Cambridge, which would mean our family relocating from southern NJ. Looking to start in a rental unit until our daughter fininshes high school in two years. I have never been up to the area yet, but have been looking more closely at Waltham and Arlington on the web. Trying not to pay an arm and a leg for a rental yet have a good and safe school for our daughter. any input would be appreciated about these towns and an other suggestions anyone would have

I'd go with Arlington over Waltham for the high school. You might want to check Belmont, near Waverly Square, as well.

Depending on where in Cambridge the job is, other towns farther east may work for the commute. A lot of jobs in Cambridge are over to the east of MIT, which makes the commute from Arlington or Waltham longer (still not too bad though).
