Danvers and Melrose are very nice. Saugus, Peabody and Winthrop are a little more blue-collar, but still nice communities. Crime shouldn't be a concern in any of them.

I live near the towns mentioned above. It really depends on what you are looking for.

Danvers is the priciest of the group and where you will most likely find the largest lot sizes and a real suburban feel. Danvers is a very well run town and its large commercial base keeps property taxes reasonable, of all the towns you listed it would get my vote.

However, if you are working in Boston and prefer a shorter commute, you might like Withrop or Melrose. Winthrop is very close to Boston and offers terrific proximity to the water but you will get older homes on very small lots as the trade off. Their schools have a lot of funding problems right now so that may be a concern for you.

Melrose offers 2 commuter rail stops plus the Oak Grove T-stop and is a very traditional town with a well defined downtown area with a few boutiques, a small grocery store, auto repair shops, etc. They are renovating the schools, which has been a long standing complaint, so that is a step in the right direction.

Saugus and Peabody benefit from large commercial tax bases but both communities have constant financial challenges. The housing stock runs from older turn of the century homes in the town centers to million dollar McMansions on the west sides of both communities. Both towns offer lots of activities for children with vey active recreation, youth sports and Scouting programs.

Downtown Peabody has major flooding issues. Winthrop is very close to Logan airport, so there is considerable plane noise. Danvers is a long commute to Boston. Not to be all negative or anything :-)

My choice is between Peabody and Saugus.Ive heard good and bad about both towns but nothing major. The one concern is the neighboring towns of Saugus.Ive only heard negative things about towns such as lynn, malden, and revere.Im wondering if i have to worry about the problems there happening in saugus?

I've spent time in all of those communities - Danvers is the nicest - a bit pricey though.

I grew up in Saugus. Aside from teenagers drinking in the woods, the only crimes in town are the car thefts that occur in the strip malls along rt 1, and the shoplifting from the stores in said strip malls. Saugus doesn't share the same crime stats it's neighbors have.

no you dont have to really worry about crime. saugus also is bordered by lynnfield, wakefield and melrose so if you decide to move to saugus then you can move to that area instead.

PEABODY RESIDENT..EACH LOCALE HAS ITS ADVANTAGES AND DRAWBACKS
PEABODY HAS GOOD ACCESS TO EVERYWHERE BECAUSE OF THE HIGHWAY AND ROADWAY ACCESS
HOUSING IS OK BUT NOT A LOT OF RENTAL OR APTS
sAUGUS HAS MORE APT RENTAL A BIT MORE URBAN THAN PEABODY
dANVERS IS MORE RURAL OR SMALL TOWN OF THEM ALL HAS GOOD ROAD WAY AAND HIGHWAY ACCESS ..AGAIN RENTAL NOT AS AVAILABLE AS IN MORE URBAN SETTING
WNTHROP ..NOT ALL THAT ACCESSABLE MORE RENTAL THAN NOT ...AIRPORT NOISE MAJOR..SITS DIRECTLY ACROSS OPEN FLAT BAY OF WATER FROM AIRPORT RUNWAYS..LOGAN IN BOSTON MAJOR OVERFLIGHT ISSUE WITH JETS TAKING OFF AND LANDING....BUT IT FRONTS THE OCEAN
cRIME nORTH OF BOSTON NOT TO BAD BUT AS IN THE CASE OF SOME OTHER AREAS CAN BE A BIT CYCLICAL...BUT ALL IN ALL LESS THAN THE MORE URBAN AREAS CLOSER TO BOSTON..REVERE IS BOSTON NORTH...FOR BOTH GOOD AND NOT SO GOOD REASONS..FOR A MORE MELLOW LIFESTYLE PEA.DAN. SALEM BEVERLY..MORE ENERGY..SAUGUS REVERE WINTRHOP.. BEST REGARDS
