I know this thread may ilicit some criticism about what I see amongst people from Maui.
But why is it that they aren't very bubbly and friendly people? And I'm not just talking about a particular race of people. I'm talking about Hawaiians, Japanese locals and Whites from Maui.
I recall one time I stopped over at the Maui airport while flying from Chicago back to Honolulu. I had to change planes in Maui. I went to the ticketing agent, asked him for a new ticket, since the ticketing agent in chicago didn't print one for me. I also tend to talk story with some of the ticketing agents, in which they also jokingly talk to me. But this local Hawaiian guy didn't even smile at me.
I also met this guy from Maui in college who never smiled, never liked to joke around. He also had a gloomy look to his face everytime I've met him in the dorms.
I know this may sound like I'm stereotyping people, but a lot of Maui people don't seem to be friendly at all.

Stereotyping? You? Drawing conclusions about tens of thousands of very different people, based only 2 people you met? Naw....
Sounds like wish to start some action that might help you prove your point.
Sorry to hear that the two people you encountered didn't meet your expectations for their treatment towards you. I wish you better treatment from everyone else.
A couple of unfriendly people does not equate to an unfriendly island. Not everybody can be hopping around happy-go-lucky all day, every day - it is not natural or realistic. Someone having a bad day is not exclusive to Maui and people dealing with serious issues of which you are not aware is not exclusive to Maui. Yes, you are stereotyping.
Maybe it's you. A lot of people who envision themselves as socially-adept, ebullient and amusing raconteurs are actually overbearing boors who seem to delight in wasting other people's time.
It may be me but I;ve have found none of the islands to have a population of cold or unfriendly people. Most just the opposite. There will be a person who may be cold and there may be some who are unfiremndly, and probably some that are both, but never to the point of labeling the whole island that way. People are people are people, some are cold, some unfriendly, some both, but if they are just a once or twice encounter, how can i ever label the whole island like that?
