Hi there, I too am considering a traveling assignment on Maui. I have never traveled before, but have family & friends who have told me some of the nuances as well as benefits--mainly the housing stipend.

I have visited the islands twice to feel out the ebb & flow of the life/culture and have realized that each island can be quite different in terms of pace, population, traffic, medical facilities. For those of you who have experience in HI, would you say this is an accurate basic description of Hawaii?

I worry about being the "hoale," is this a well-founded fear in the medical arena? I am guessing probably not coming from So Cal. But, please correct me, as I am quite fair and realize first impressions still do carry a lot of weight.

Interestingly, the shifts are 12 hours (guaranteed 36/wk) but they are on-call shifts, so I would have no set schedule. Why do you think that is? Has anyone ever worked under these circumstances?

Also, can someone please explain why every traveling agency I contact literally tries to talk me out of Hawaii?

Appreciate anyone's/everyone's insight!.

That's pretty accurate. Oahu is pretty fast pace, Maui coming in second and the rest of the islands are pretty mellow.

Damn. People on this forum seem to think Hawaiians hate white people and are out to get them or something. It's funny.
There are 2 towns to avoid if you're a haole, Happy Valley(Maui) and Waianae(Oahu). Stay out of those and you should be fine. You'll get respect as long as you give it. Except for Happy Valley and Waianae. You need to earn respect. Till then, you'll be hated. hah

What do you do?

They're jealous? Who knows. Could be the recent weather. It's been terrible but things have been picking up lately.
