Hello. I'm looking into moving to Maui. My friend and his girlfriend are moving there in about 6 months and I think it would be an awesome experience. I'm 19 years old as are they and we are saving money for the move. We could use some advise on what parts of Maui are nicest to live in (weather , stores , activities). But most importantly I would like to know what places have the least expensive housing options . they are looking to get a 2 bedroom apartment I'm looking for a 1or 2 bedroom but we are trying to find to most affordable ( we are 19) place but still want to be close enough to the beach to enjoy it regularly. Another issue is finding a job. Is there any city's where this would be more plausible than others. Thanks in advance. Everything helps.

Be prepared for some tough love. You may want to use the search function and find the many threads started that are similar to yours.

As for work, what is your background? Do you have any marketable skills? Finding work will be tough, especially a job that will allow you to afford your own apartment. You may want to look into renting a room with roommates.

OK so now lets get real To tide you over while finding a long term rental plan on having about 1-1/2 year savings a good number per month would be $3K -$ 4 K Apartments / Ohana's change rates with the season That would be spending half for a Studio/one bedroom. Then there is transportation for that Job Your 19 so you probably do not have a large work history You did not mention if you're independently wealthy or have a sugar daddy.

Now for the good. place a bank account with the amount for a return trip ticket in a safe place so if things don't work out you can return. Sell most of your possessions pack the rest in USPS flat rate boxes Summer clothes light weights. some work clothes for the industry you plan on working in Even Aloha Shirts are cheaper on the mainland.

Good luck! I moved there, then moved back to the Mainland.
Vacationing there / Living there are TWO VERY DIFFERENT THINGS. I lost about $180,000.00 in my dumb "I'm going to live on Maui" move.

How does one lose 180k moving to Maui? I was able to land a job off island, and rent a condo that allowed my dog immediately. I didn't ship anything at all, and had a very small amount of savings. I don't understand all these dramatic situations. Maybe I'm just lucky?

I should say I was living 'off island' and got the Maui job. I'm not employed through a mainland employer.

Roundtrip move - loss of wages (both on island and the return) - it all adds up quickly, especially for duel income households)

Or maybe someone trying to live beyond there means or trying to maintain there level of luxury of what they had on the mainland?

Or bought a few homes on spec in 2005 and bailed in 2009, in which case 180K would be getting off lightly.
