I am looking to apply with the DOE for a Special Education teaching position for the 2010/2011 school year. Are schools still in demand for special education teachers? I have a masters in education and I am looking at the Lahaina area. thanks for your replies.

Call the school(s) in the Lahaina area and ask them if they will have an opening next year.

Even then, DOE usually picks folks who are already on island when hiring, so you may want to vacation on Maui for the summer and apply for work then.

I spoke with the DOE and they stated that they will be hiring in special education. Also, the past few years they have hired close to 200 in each elem. and secondary special ed areas.

It's interesting that the DOE is hiring because just last night I was chatting with a SpED teacher who has 25 years of experience. She said the DOE is going to have forced furloughs to deal with the State's budget crisis.
Furloughs and Hawaii's Public Schools (http://doe.k12.hi.us/news/furlough/index.htm - broken link)

There is definitely a need for more qualified SpEd teachers especially on the Neighbor Islands.

DOE bureacracy can take some getting used to.

Not sure if they are hiring but check out Kapolei High School. They may have something available.

The individual schools list their available positions with the state department of education. Everyone has to apply through the state and then request the individual schools. You can get hired and not know which school you will be teaching at almost up until time for school to start. The state DOE covers all the public schools on all the islands. It seems an awkward set up to me but that's what they do.

Last I heard, 2 weeks ago (from the horse's mouth itself) was there is still demand for special ed.....you are lucky you are qualified to teach that...I am in the position of being a highly qualified elementary teacher who may be SOL for the 2010/2011 school year for the simple reason that there aren't any jobs!

I too might end up that way with DH transfer to the big island. I have a Masters in Sped and a Masters in Curriculum & Instruction- specialize in autism (currently working on BCBA). Any need for BCBAs out there? Would love to hear from a sped teacher already out there.
