I'm looking to purchase an efficient compact vehicle and I'm giving the 2012 Mazda3 a serious look.
Generally when purchasing a compact vehicle, people automatically recommend Honda or Toyota and more recently, Ford and Hyundai. However, Mazda doesn't really get mentioned too often. Are they considered reliable and good vehicles?

Thanks for any insight.
If you want the safest in a demolition derby I would recommend Subaru Impreza.

Again this year every major automaker has at least one winner. Subaru remains the only manufacturer with the distinction of earning awards for every model it builds. Subaru picks up 5 awards, including one for the redesigned Impreza, a small car.
I’ve heard they’re great cars, but with one exception. It’s my understanding that they tend to rust into the ground pretty quickly.
Really? My wife had a 1996 Mazda Protege LX until two years ago when she was t-boned by a Jeep running a stop sign. It had over 140,000 miles and no rust. Though it wasn't fast 0-60, it handled very well.

I’ve seen numerous posts regarding much newer Mazdas rusting.
The 2012 Mazda 3 is built on the newer C1 Ford platform and is the basis for the Euro Focus that competes with the likes of BMW. It's a very well built car. I think it's a good choice and so does my girl- she just got a 2011 Mazda 3.
Mazda 3 is a solid car. You'll love how it handles, especially if you get the manual trans. The only real weakness is their automatic transmissions - but that's only at higher mileage. Seems to be common among all cars these days.

I had a 94 Protege that made it through 2007 without a spot of rust on it.

You live in the South, so unless you live literally within a mile or two of the Gulf you don't count.

I have a Mazda of the same era (2004) as the one in that picture. It has spent its entire life north of 40 degrees and it still doesn't have a spot of rust on it.
