The US was never a Democracy. It's a Constitutional Republic which is different.

A Constitutional Republic is a Type of democracy, depending on which law professor you talk to on any given day. At least in theory.
In practice the U.S is really a Corporate republic, because just a handful industry groups control any given piece of legislation. But we all get to vote, so at least we enjoy the illusion of democracy.
