Bari Weiss: New York Times Editor Wanted to ‘Check with’ Chuck Schumer before Running Tim Scott Op-Ed

On a recent episode of her podcast, journalist Bari Weiss informed her guest, Senator Tim Scott (R., S.C.), that during her stint at the New York Times, an editor instructed a colleague to “check with Senator Schumer” before running an op-ed on police reform he had submitted.

At the time of the op-ed submission, Scott was spearheading the effort to pass a police reform bill in the wake of George Floyd’s murder at the hands of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. The bill, which would have denied federal funding to departments that refused to ban the chokehold, ultimately stalled — an outcome Scott blamed on Democrats, who he claims wanted to use the issue of police brutality as a political cudgel more than they wanted to offer solutions.

Scott is right on his claim about Democrats not solving problems. Chauvin’s knee-on-the-neck tactic is legal in one place – Minneapolis.

As far as the NY Times and Schumer… I know the Times is generally liberal – I didn’t think Schumer was allowed to perform editing duties.

However, this is the second instance of Schumer telling the media what they can and can't print/broadcast.

I don't think anybody doubts that left-wing media outlets like the New York Times are virtually indistinguishable from a Democratic PR (Public Relations) firm. Of course they would run it by their client.

Weiss has not worked for the NYT for over two years. She was known as something of a provocateur who intentionally stirred up controversy to gain readership (clickbait on ink, so to speak). Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Trump Jr. and Ben Shapiro are big fans which in some ways tells you everything you need to know about her.

She currently writes a self-published newsletter.

Well, the title of this thread certainly is misleading.

What exactly does "check with" mean? The article does not elaborate, and without detail, the OP's assertion is just fantasy.

It is much worse than anyone knows, yet some people keep buying that rag, because it feeds into the narrative they believe in.

Journalism is mostly dead, especially at large corporate news agencies. A once respected and trusted profession has had the curtain pulled back, and people do not like what they see.

Also, as an FYI - the NYT has not endorsed a (R) for poutus for over 60 years.
That is right (or should I say left), think of some of the (D) losers they supported over the years that were slaughtered because they were horrible candidates to run this country.
Yet that doesn't stop the NYT's from supporting them.

I don't do fantasies in politics. Who does that? I don't know how the idea of this being a fantasy even crosses your mind... but it did.

I can't post the whole article - but clearly Schumer was part of the process in allowing Sen. Scott's opinion piece to post... regardless of whether or not you accept it.
