Last week I went to a concert in Overton Park at the Levitt Shell. Having lived in Memphis for 23 years, I had never heard about the Shell or of the free concerts there. I thought it a great place for families to go and enjoy an evening out at a free concert.

Agreed, it's highly under rated. They do shows on, I believe, Thurs, Fri, Sat, and Sun in the summer, all free. All sort of music, plus one day is a kids show.

It just had a $1.2 million overhaul and in its' 3rd season. It has historic significance such as Elvis' first major Memphis concert in the late 50's & Ozzy Osbourne-fronted Black Sabbath in the mid 70's. Here's a cool shot I took while at the Big Star tribute for Alex Chilton, the front man & key songwriter. Big Star released 3 albums in the early-mid 70's and sang the song "In The Street" which is the intro music to the comedy sitcom "That 70's Show". They're still regarded as forefathers of American Indie Rock and were even more popular in the U.K. Although it was more of a memorial with guest vocalist, not to mention the weather being a little ominous - Midtown cameout in the thousands to celebrate the passing of an era and welcoming the new, in the tradition and high standards of true independent Memphis music.

That place is awesome

My older sister use to take me there with all her freinds back in the 70's. Ppl would be all laid out, smoking there lettuce, snorting coke, overdosing, getting drunk, having sex...It was memories that will last a lifetime

I'll never forget the mid 70's evening my date and I were just hanging out at the park , heard some music , walked over and Harry Chapin was doing a show ( and what a show , Harry was great ) ... there were just a few hundred people and we just took a seat in the grass and enjoyed the show.
