I recently moved to Memphis to work for one of the Biomedical firms. I'm 25 and from the North. I'm not in to all the religious stuff. Where can I meet normal young professionals. I live downtown.

Join MPACT memphis. It's more or less a group full of young professional people (lots of downtowners) who socialize. The point of the group is to support Memphis and build a stronger community. But it's a good way to meet peers.

As Pearlbob says, join a group. I met 14 other guys from Memphis and the surrounding area by being a member of another forum where we all share a common interest. Through this other forum we planned an outing based on this common interest. Some of the guys were old friends while others came from as far away as Nashville. One guy had just moved to Memphis two days earlier so he was already meeting new friends.

Also if you went to college, college sports are huge here. If you went to a large university, even if it's not anywhere close, chances are there are group of alumni here who get together during the year. Check your school's alumni website to see (although there could be an unofficial group, a quick google search would probably turn something up).

There aren't many young professionals in Memphis. Memphis is a very blue collar city that mainly consists of undereducated, low-skilled workers. Most highly educated people and young professionals leave Memphis and go to places like Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, (or even Nashville), etc. to find better career opportunties, so good luck finding others here who are like you...

You're going to have a tough time. Memphis is very religious and atheists are not tolerated at all. The majority of the city is Black, poor and crime is high. There big presence of lowbrow redneck fundamentalist christians in the Caucasian community. There is also a rapidly increasing Hispanic community that is poor and illiterate for the most part.

Memphis is not a Mecca for Freethought and culture. Just saying.

You're definitely living in the right place. Downtown is full of young professionals. (I'm guessing the last 2 people who commented do not live or spend much time here, or they would know that). Do you drink? A good place to try to meet some people is Calhouns, a little dive bar on GE Patterson. My husband used to go there a lot and he's met a bunch of friends just from hanging out there. I think it's easier there because the bar is so small.

You could also join the South Main Association. During Trolley Tour (last Friday of every month) they grill burgers and have a keg or two of Bosco's beer for members. I've met a bunch of people just hanging out there. If you're willing to strike up a conversation with someone, you should have some luck. I hope you meet people soon!!

Welcome to Memphis!

Ditto. There are tons of young professionals here. MPACT and the South Main Association are easy ways to meet people, especially if you are already living downtown. And you definitely do not have to be a drinker to meet peers at a bar; just sit at a bar and have one beer - not necessary to get totally trashed
