I have a future job in the eastern Memphis area, right at 240 and Poplar Avenue. Does anyone have any suggestions for a nice, safe area in which to rent, within a 30 minute drive? I would prefer a more "city" feel, over a suburban feel.

Well, you're in luck. You can get to Poplar/240 from anywhere in Memphis - and most of the suburbs - in 30 minutes or less! Many of the nicer and safer areas would be more like 5-10 minutes...

The Poplar-240 area is a great place to live in the city. There are several apartment complexes along and near Poplar both east and west of the 240 interchange that might fit what you're looking for. Check out several to get a feel for the variety that's available and definitely scout just north/south of Poplar (within a mile or so) -- you should be good either direction (say, between Quince & Walnut Grove).

Not sure how much "city" feel you're looking for, but I recommend checking out Fairfax Manor for a rental -- hubby and I lived there for several years...only moved away because we were ready to buy a home. It's a townhouse complex located at the corner of Poplar Pike & Massey, within spitting distance of Poplar and just a few stoplights from I-240. We loved the neighborhood and, while the units weren't new or updated, they were homey and comfy. The management was excellent and very nice. They took care of any issues we had pretty quickly.

The complex is gated with plenty of parking -- you can get units with a garage, but most don't have one. I believe all units have an attic (nice!). It's very close to shopping of all types, a hospital, a movie theater, good restaurants, doctors, dentists, pharmacies, banks, etc. A new Best Buy and Target were just built a few minutes away in the last couple of years.

Since it's near the expressway and Poplar, it's quick and easy to get out to other parts of the city. The complex is bordered by a very nice residential neighborhood to the south and east, and by a couple of very well maintained private schools on the west (hardly ever heard a peep from them). The only downside, I would say, is that it's bordered on the north (across Poplar Pike) by railroad tracks. That may or may not bother some folks. (The tracks run just south of Poplar, so you might look on the north side if you can't sleep through the noise.)

Edit: FWIW, Poplar Pike changes names right at Massey -- west of there it's called "Park Ave." -- east of Massey it's "Poplar Pike."

I agree that the part of East Memphis described above is great; Actually, I am contemplating moving there myself. Great schools, shopping nearby, etc.. However, it should be emphasized that it is not what everyone would call urban. Once you visit (assuming you are), if you find you want something more urban, you could try areas of Midtown, although it would be longer commute; you could check Cooper young, Central Gardens, Evergreen, etc. One word of advice if you go this route, is that the good and bad areas of midtown are often near each other. There are areas in/near downtown (mud island, downtown proper, etc) that are also good, but that would be too much of a commute for my taste. All depends on what you are looking for.. if you have school age children, downtown, in my opinion, is not the best. East Memphis has the best by far best schools within city limits.

I currently live near Walnut Grove and Mendenhall. It is a lovely area. I have had no petty crimes like car break ins. I have been told the school I'm under (White Station) is good and I've noticed a lot of private schools. Everything is close as I can easily hop on to Sam Cooper. There is also plenty of shopping near by (thankfully several big groceries- discount to high-end and a very close by Lowe's) and any kind of restaurant one could want. I can walk a few blocks to the green line and my surrounding neighborhood is great for a stroll, too. Lots of people jogging, baby stoller pushing, and lovely dog walkers who almost all pick up after their dogs.
However, without a car, I'd be isolated. I don't walk to any shopping. The area feels more like a suburb than urban like Midtown. If you want to walk down to a local eatery for dinner, have a few drinks and walk home, this isn't the area for you. If you want to be amazingly central to everything by car, and don't mind paying for a fairly crime free area in exchange for home size (and sometimes character, the homes are mostly mid century), east can be a great place to call home.
