I always think of North Memphis as being north of Jackson Avenue, south of 40/240. Once you get to 240, you're in different areas -- Frayser (to the west) and Raleigh (to the east), both of which, while not ideal, are miles better than North Memphis.

(And yes, even within that broad geographic area, there are good neighborhoods. Example: the areas north of Jackson near Rhodes College, including University Circle.)

Very true. It's all 'north' to me in midtown

However, for a young couple that the male is working in Germantown, and the female is entering law school....that doesn't seem like the type of couple who should be considering a rental in Raleigh or Frayser. Not to typecast, but they sound like a much different class of people than would want to rent up there.

I grew up in Scenic Hills off of James Rd and Watkins. There are still really nice neighborhoods back there, but most of the people are in their 50's or 60's and they've been there for a good while. It's a great community, but you have to go through shady areas to get there.

If you have decided on large suburban apt complexes, there is a brand new one at Goodlet Farms and Appling that is that is not too far from Germantown and the U of M, safe area, easy drive, except during rush hour.

Also Pearlbob's information seems dead on!

Scenic Hills is a good neighborhood.

One of my favorite neighborhoods in the entire city happens to be in Frayser -- Georgian Hills. I love the houses there, and there's a good sense of community in that neighborhood. Rolling hills, big houses, century-old trees -- You can't find that combination anywhere else in the city.

Rugby is also a good neighborhood in Frayser, though it has some very shady spots.

I was thinking that was a retirement home type place. ?? Like an assisted living thing for older adults? I know the place on the east side of the street is (like the one behind Bellevue).

No, these are very recent, under a year, and are at Goodlett Farms and Garret Ridge, will have the name tomorrow.

But you have the area, it is across from a Seminary School, and next to some ranch style condos, which are across the street from the retirement type place.

Ahhhh okay. good to know. I used to live over there and drove by the retirement place a lot...it's a nice, quieter area. Although traffic is of course a nightmare on Sundays.
