I haven't seen a car like that before -- a fold down cover? Must be a tight fit in there, and hot if you sitting that close to the engine.

Oh yeah, and others such as the Super Duster. Memphis was a hotbed for funny car racing in the '70s.

I remember seeing "Fire Burnouts" when the nitro burning machines came to the Lakeland 1/4 mile. Cool stuff indeed.

Any idea why the local racetrack shut down? Not enough cash flow or something else?

One of my friends from work races a BMW. He used to race at Memphis, among other places, but now goes mainly to Alabama (Barber Motorsports Park, just outside of Birmingham). It's a really nice park, but it is a long drive -- about 4 hours. I would go more often to watch if there was something closer.

The park was recently sold, and they are planning on reopening it.
