When cities pour money into sports teams and venues, they lose money. Only the team owner and players rake in any cash. It also pulls entertainment dollars / disposable incomes from being spent on smaller local businesses which add more worth to the city and provide more long term financial stability to the city as well.
There is some merit to what you say, however if major sports always pulled out critical amounts of discresionary spending dollars from a city, Memphis would not have been able to sustain fifty million dollars per month draining out to the Tunica casinos, which was the pace money was documented to have been spent there from Shelby County citizens for the first several years of their existence. Add to that the years of sold out U of M Basketball games, the large amount of successful concerts mentioned in another thread, the huge success of Beale Street businesses and the large amount of dollars spent by Memphis area people dining out every week. Turns in the economy have affected some businesses everywhere, but I doubt that it can be shown that in Memphis buying Grizzlies tickets weakened support for anything; instead the players gave back millions to St Jude and other charities and they boosted community morale with their involvement in events for a cause.
Instead of tearing down this city in any way, the Grizzlies and the Tigers give people from both sides of long standing issues a focal point upon which they can both agree and cheer. That certainly is a good starting point, and from there they can and in some areas have moved on to higher ground.

Doesn't add 'desirability of a city' ?? what ? you can't be serious, right ? tell residents of Miami that (Dolphins, Heat, etc) or Orlando (Magic, etc), Tampa Bay (Bucs, Rays, spring leagues, Lightning, etc)

how about NYC (the Yankees ! , Nets, etc etc) Basketball towns are also different that big football towns, right ? (Can you say Green Bay ? Chicago ?? DALLAS ???)
I beg to differ...professional sport and venues add a huge amount to the 'desirability' in re entertainment availability to MOST (not all) cities.

It is true that having an NBA basketball team in Memphis, does not 'add desirability' to Memphis. In that regard, I have to agree with you strangely enough

Strangely enough, the winning Memphis NBA presence does not add desireablity to the city for you, nor does anything else. We get it.

Heck, I don't like or watch basketball in the first place. I watch tennis, some golf , some formula 1, some nascar, and quite a bit of Barclays Premier League. It's not my deal to watch or support sports I don't really like, but my obvious point is there is a basketball constituency allegedly in Memphis given their Tiger High following, and the demographic who grew up playing the game of basketball as opposed to playing tennis or soccer for example. Another point is that the tickets are cheaper than anywhere else in the league, and residents STILL can't afford to go or have an interest. If they did the numbers would be apparent. There is no broad based support for pro basketball in Memphis.

Grizzlies attendance has increased to an average of 1,500 per game above the 2008 season, year to date. That's currently 14,278 for 2010 / 2011. That's in a city which also supports the eighth highest attendance in NCAA BBall, the games often being played within a day or two of each other. No other NBA team plays in the same venue witin short time frames of an NCAA top ten (att.) home team. This equates to 30,000 plus basketball supporting seats paid for at FedEx Forum sometimes basically overnight. Even though all paid for tickets don't show for every Grizzlies game (or Tigers game for that matter) they do show decent support for the NBA as well as the Tigers.

Hmmm. Per the NBA's stats book, the FedEx Forum is 78.8 percent occupied (on average) when the Grizzlies play. While that's way, way short of the 100+ percent that the Mavericks and Bulls average, it's still not bad--especially considering that: 1) the Grizzlies play in one of the poorest cities of all the NBA cities, and 2) we're in one of the worst economic recessions in the history of the US.

Add to that the fact that the five teams that average lower occupancy than the Grizzlies (Nets, Kings, Timberwolves, Pacers, Pistons, and 76ers) are all located in much larger markets than Memphis. In fact, a couple of those markets are more than three times as large as Memphis' market.

A little perspective on which our latest troll can chew.

Well the performance of the last two nights with exciting fourth quarter action against higher rated teams, both in an impossible away arena where nobody but the Grizz seems to win, and before the home crowd tonight is solidifying existing fan support and insures new fans on into the playoffs. Randolph, Allen, Battier and company are excited to be a part of it, and even though I would have limited interest in the NBA most of the time personally when Memphis isn't involved, I sure am on their bandwagon, and I'll make all the rest of the games I can.
