In areas where there traffic light cameras are posted, the yellow light is appreciably shorter, making it more likely that a motorist will run through the light. The cameras are not about safety, they are about revenue. If they were about safety, any revenue above the cost of operation should go to the state. Some GPS systems will alert you to their locations.

The shorter clearance interval (I.e. yellow light) at these intersections is a myth. Check with any transportation official and they will clear this myth up for you.

There is a law that specifically says the yellow light timing cannot be shortened at intersections where red light cameras are installed. There have been cities that have done it in the past, and they were shut down pretty quickly. The cities had to pay penalties as well.

Personally, I don't see why people are so upset about red light cameras. Don't run the red lights and you'll never know they're there!

Since I live in Cordova I drive through intersections with them all the time. I don't know if there are fewer accidents since they went in, but I can tell you that it has had an effect on people obeying the traffic signals. Before the lights were installed lots of people - especially those turning left where there is a left turn arrow (such as at Germantown & Dexter) pretty much ignored when the light changed. Always a couple of cars wanting to "sneak" through rather than wait an extra couple of minutes. That situation is much improved now...
