I've posted here before asking about apartments, and now I've sort of narrowed it down to these two. I am moving to Memphis to work in MCS with Teach for America. My boyfriend is coming with me. I have never been to Memphis, but luckily I do not need to make a decision about where to live before I move; housing is provided for the first few weeks but I was hoping to get some input on these two communities. Anything would be helpful, including the answer to the question what is the area around South Bluffs like?

Thanks!

South Bluffs is in the South Main Arts area. Several bars, restaurants, and shops nearby. Downtown is a short walk or trolley ride away. South Bluffs is just south of a very nice/expensive neighborhood of basically zero lot-line houses. There are was very industrial, but many condo complexes were built years ago; however many are still empty due to the real estate crash. But, South Bluffs is gated and in sort of a different area - with the houses, and not with the condos.

A good-sized percentage of occupants at both will be young professionals. Mud island has more by number as it has a larger population and is popular with the graduate students at UT health science center (medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy, etc.). Personally, I prefer the island but know people that have been happy living at both places.
