You’re correct to ask for the good neighborhoods as that would be a considerably shorter list than the bad ones. I always tell people to try and live near Poplar Avenue, as that’s the established “lifeline” of Memphis. While there are isolated exceptions, the further North or South of Poplar you go typically results in more decay & blight. It boils down to budget as higher rents and home prices often translate to better neighborhoods.

A good point of reference is the color coded map that was created by a City data user...

Neighborhoods - Google Maps

Green=Good, Purple=Good..but some my not like it because of some surrounding areas, Yellow=Precede with caution, Orange=Bad..but not the worst, and Red=Bad and worst.

Great map! Thanks for posting that. I am researching neighborhoods and this helps a lot.

be careful of a few areas that are changing since this particular map was offered...Memphis can change farily quickly it seems...like stay away from anywhere very close to eastern part of Winchester road, I don't care if it's towards Collierville or in southwind area/aHacks Cross even. Many areas around the Wolfchase Mall and in Cordova in general I would NOT buy in right now at all, I don't care how 'cheap' and lovely it is right now.

Get a very very knowledgable realtor, and not necessarily ANYBODY with Crye Leike...find an independent !

I think the map is still very accurate as far as the good and not so good areas of town. The areas have not changed much at all since the map was created in 2008.
