Germantown is really far away, at least further than I would want to commute in Memphis traffic (which is frustrating to say the least). Live in Midtown, it's way closer and cheaper.

I have never heard of the Estate Dr. apartments. Are you talking about apartments that are on Estate Dr. or is that really the name of the complex? The only apartments I know of near Estate Dr. are the “Park Estate” apartments, which are located near Park Ave and Estate Dr. This is a very nice area that is convenient to everything. The commute to UT would be about 15 to 20 minutes down Poplar. I have heard good things about these apartments.

VBROWN, I'm also moving to Memphis this fall, but for Law School, I share similar concerns as you. I grew up in East Tennessee. However, I've had a close friend (also grew up in East Tn.) who has lived in downtown and midtown safely. I don't think you have to live 30-45 minutes outside the city to feel safe.

That's a great neighborhood, and I've spoken to a nurse who lives there and is quite happy. The only thing which would worry me there is the proximity of the train tracks which run nearby (noise). It is pretty active. Other than that, there is a huge variety of restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, movies, etc. nearby and this is a gated small complex.
