We are a couple in our 30's and are moving to Memphis. We have 4 children (14, 12, 7, and 6). This move is because of work which will primarily be in the city but we are looking for HELP on where to live. We don't necessarily want to be in Memphis but rather in the surrounding suburbs. Our main criteria is the school system. Mainly the HIGH SCHOOL & MIDDLE SCHOOL. I've been reading some of these threads and have heard Germantown mentioned several times. Again the public school system is what's most important to us.
We will be renting for the first year or so and then will buy a house. Our 7 year old daughter is autistic so if anyone knows of a solid program for children with autism, please let us know as well. Thanks in advance all!

If schools are the most important issue I would suggest you check out Germantown, Collierville, and Bartlett. Make sure you are actually in the municipal jurisdiction of these cities because they will each have their own school systems in the 2013-2014 school year. The municipal school issue is a new development in the area since we previously only had a Memphis City school system and a suburban system (2 separate systems). The Memphis City system dropped their charter last year and they will now be run by the overall county system. In light of this, legislation was passed to allow the suburban cities to create their own school systems, so they would not be overpowered by the sheer numbers of the Memphis voting block. Combining the systems would give the suburbs little say in how things are run. The municipal systems will give the suburban cities local control of education in their jurisdiction. Germantown will have the most expensive housing stock, followed closely by Collierville. Bartlett will be the least expensive of the 3. Bartlett and Germantown are adjacent to Memphis, so commuting may be better from these cities depending on your location in the suburb. There are a couple other nice suburbs in the area that you may want to also consider. Arlington will also have good schools, but it is way out there. Arlington will more than likely have a separate, autonomous, school system also. Lakeland is also nice, but the school issue is a little murky in that city right now. This city does not levy a property tax so it is not known at this time if they will vote to issue a property tax and create a separate school system. You may also want to look at the north MS suburbs, but you will have to pay MS state income tax if you live down there. There is no state income tax in TN.

I will also add that there are good options inside the City of Memphis as well. Look in the areas of East Memphis zoned for the White Station Schools. Housing will be on the more pricey side (similar to Germantown and Collierville) and property taxes will be higher, but the White Station schools are great.

Because of the impending school issue, I would also say either Germantown or Collierville. Make sure you are within the city limits of either suburb or Memphis will gobble you up.

To 1L, if you want to be a Tiger Dad or Tiger Mom (Google Amy Chua, Yale Law, Tiger Mom), please go to White Station (Zip 38120) area. If you are not, choose germantown or houston high if you can afford Germantown.

East Memphis or Germantown. Do private schools if you can afford them.

When you buy or rent:

Shelby County has six incorporated cities other than Memphis: Germantown, Millington, Bartlett, Lakeland, Arlington, and Collierville. If you live within the city limits of any of these cities you will never be annexed by Memphis, as it is illegal for one incorporated area to annex another incorporated area. Each of these cities have a "reserve annexation area" so reasearch the boundaries, but beware...they are currently introducing legislation that communities in these areas will have to vote to allow an annexation to go through. If you want to be in the suburbs make sure to move into the city limits, not the county.

As Tigertate said G'town and Collierville are forming their own school systems, which given a few years , will probably be on par with the best of private schools in Memphis...

The public schools in Germantown would be a good choice; The Bodine school (serving kids with dyslexia) may be able to provide you with some guidance with regards to options for kids with autism (Home)

This is a stretch...to say the least; you may not be familiar with all the schools in the area. If you look at college matriculation, college acceptances, etc., you'll find the disparity between the top private high schools (MUS, St. Mary's, etc,) and the high schools in Germantown and Collierville to be enormous. I don't see anything changing with the creation of these new school districts...at all. You'll have the same kids, same teachers, etc. To clarify, the schools in these suburbs are fine, but I see no reason for anyone to expect that they will close the achievement gap with the top private schools in the area

Just to put this in perspective, we can look at the top end:
this past year, St Mary's had 8 national merit scholars out of a class of 60, MUS had 15 out of a class of about 110.
The three high schools in the suburbs you mention had 20 out of a combined student population of over 1200
This not not to mention White station high, where you had 22 out of the approximately 230 kids in the optional/magnet program.

In any case, I am a proponent of public education, but believe that while the schools in these suburbs will remain solid, they will trail the top private schools and the top optional school in the city; in fact, the only reason I am not recommending an optional school to the OP is that her youngest will be better served in the suburbs. In any case, individual students can succeed at any of these schools

Maybe I am just pointlessly fanning the fires of a previous debate, but I would like to point out that the article doesn't say that all of those 22 are necessarily from the optional program.
