If you have to live in the inner city (memphis itself), where are the safe places to be. For example, in kansas city wesport is a great place to be same with the country club plaza. But I would never find myself on prospect avenue unless I want to be shot and mugged for the whole $3 I'm worth.

I'm being transfered to the east side of memphis (from KC) and was wondering how that was and what areas I should avoid?

I think Midtown & East Memphis are supposed to be relatively safe.

It all depends on the exact address of the home you are buying. One street can be fine, the next bad. "east memphis" includes such a huge geographical area, you cannot generalize about it.

The further east the better. Lakeland is a great small town area where they charge NO city taxes. Homes are pricey, 200,000 to 300,000. Germantown is a very established area just east of Memphis city, with a well maintained police force. Germantown was once considered the place to live if you had to work in Memphis. But so much has grown up out east that property out of Shelby County and moving into Fayette County is much safer than anywhere in Memphis city. I've grown up in Memphis area and lived here over 50 years. I could not recommend any area in Memphis city to be a safe area. The crime is very bad in the city. You might want to follow our local news channel WMCTV.com to get a better read on the local happening here daily.

Lakeland is a haven for gangs. The City of Germantown hangs people on its theater stage.

I wouldn't choose either place.

I don't know where these rumors about gang activity in Lakeland started. It's a cookie cutter, pretty middle to upper class, white suburb of Memphis.

As for the Germantown thing, I believe that was a prank by some kids. No one was hanged. Germantown is the wealthiest and most upper class suburb of Memphis.

Neither are "east Memphis" though and both are it's own town. If you want to live within Memphis city limits, neither of these are relevant to you.

My brother is a deputy in Shelby County. He says your Lakeland comment is bunk. They have had very little criminal activity in Lakeland to respond to.

Of course it's bunk. I'm making light of another poster who wrote sometime back that Lakeland was overrun with gangs.

(self-edit. Not nice.)

My apologies for interjecting humor.

Yes, she wrote that Lakeland has lots of gang activity and that the schools there were awful because of the gangs. I'll see if I can dig that thread up.
