Hi,

There's a possibility that my husband may need to transfer to the Memphis area soon. We are currently in Texas and my question is: are there as many BIG bugs in the 'burbs of Memphis as there are here in TX (mainly, The Woodlands)? We get these huge tree cockroaches that can fly here and I've had at least half a dozen of them in my house since we moved here about six months ago.

Oh, then there's these lovely banana spiders, which I've NEVER heard of before, but have gotten to see up close and personal on my garage. About as big as my hand (not exaggerating) and thick. I get the shivs just thinking about it.

I am "bugaphobic" and this, so far, is the only thing I don't like about TX. If we do need to relocate to TN, which I am NOT relishing due to we just moved to TX not too long ago, then maybe less of a pestilence problem in the home would help me feel better about it.

Can anyone give any info?

Thanks.

The only bug infestations I've heard of have been on Mud Island, which is just north of downtown.

Yes there are bugs, but not the huge roaches like Texas. Seriously consider your move to the Memphis area, if you are currently living in TX. I have been here a year and miss TX terribly. I wish I would have found this forum prior to our move.

I just moved here recently and have seen many daddy long legs, a few other random spiders but none the size of the wolf spiders we had in Florida that sound very similar to the banana spider you mentioned. I also have not seen any palmetto bugs (the flying tree cockroaches you mentioned). I have seen crickets and such but nothing too bad.........oh there was that centipede that was longer than my index finger, but they are much easier to deal with than some of those not so pleasant bugs you mentioned.........
Are you buying a home? We just moved to Arlington and absolutely love it.

Thanks for the info. We would be buying a home, and of course we are still weighing the pros and cons of moving at all. I'd be very glad not to see those flying roach thingies any more, that's for sure, though! lol From what I hear, we'd be looking at either Collierville or Germantown.

Bout the largest one i've seen in my Collierville home is a small black spider. I've lived here for a long time (over 30 years).

I've seen the flying roaches in Memphis (some of them moderate in size), but they aren't nearly as prevalent as they are here in FL.
