Operation Safe Community leaders note declines in crime » The Commercial Appeal

"According to Operation Safe Community, through the end of 2011 major violent crime in Memphis -- including murder, forcible rape, aggravated assault and robbery -- decreased nearly 24 percent compared to the same time period in 2006, when Operation Safe Community was launched.

In addition, major property crimes also saw steep declines over the last five years, down 26.8 percent when compared to 2006, with motor vehicle thefts seeing the sharpest decline from 2006 to 2011, a 49.4 percent reduction."

This is great news Memphis is one of the best cities in America barring the crime. Once the crime rate gets lower memphis will once again return to being one of the most desirable places in this great nation.

I agree. But at the same time, it's kinda a hidden gem for those of us who really know what it's about. I have gotten into arguments with posters in other 'cities' about how Memphis really is, amazing how people just assume things when they have no idea what they are talking about. But great post.

Police doing their good job..and should be tough on those who try to harrase another human for money or anything which does not belong to them...
Government should find ways to deploy them in some work which would make them to go to bed tired after work...and this is the only way to reduce crimes related to robbery.

That would require a major shift in the city's demographics.

Agree with both of y'all. There is a nascent innovative tradition that the location seems to just inspire. It's done so in brilliant ways in the past, and that spirit is starting again. Hopefully it gets fueled by the people of the region who recognize that entrepreneurism will light the way. Looks like certain neighborhoods are embracing it. South Main has local owners, many of which have been so successful they are expanding. Actually, many local entrepreneurs seem to be expanding. Hollywood Feed, Local Gastropub, Central BBQ, Swanky's, and many more. Hopefully that's just the start. Broad Ave started its rebirth with an experiment in community development -- temporary stores. And it has succeeded.

Recognize and share achievements. We have flaws, but we are headed in the right direction. Those pulling us there need to be appreciated, supported, and joined by those who share a vision of a better tomorrow for Memphis.
