Those are the kind of malicious or ignorant conceptions that are being spread?!! I don't understand the often passive-aggressive unwarranted vitriol from other areas of Tennessee. It's like the worst kind of high school backstabbing gossip. The extreme and ludicrous nature of the concept suggests a spiteful judgmental motivation toward Memphis behind it.

Buzz cut away. I'm not sure why the lie angers me so, but possibly it reveals the ease with which lies can be flippantly and virulently spread like a contagion. If the audience is naively trusting of the source, those lies could be perceived credible.

I think the base in Millignton is has been seriouly scaled down. The biggest thing though is that you felt the need to ask. The feeling that made you ask is the biggest reason that you never bother going to memphis.

It doesn't always come from other parts of TN, some of it comes from right here in the Memphis area. Lord knows there is enough evidence of that right here on this board.
As far as vitriol, well that seems a bit harsh, but yes, I understand why the rest of the state sort of shuns Memphis. A lot of the negative things coming from Memphis, poverty, crime, bad schools etc. tend to help make the entire state look bad. Memphis is like the black sheep in the family, everybody else just wishes they'd get their act together and stop embarrassing the rest of the family. Memphis seems to be on the right track now, I see and hear about a lot of positives that seem to be happening there. I think it's just going to take a while for other people to see that and overcome their preconceived notions.

And that's the problem. How many people post and say they were expecting a crap hole when they got here and they were surprised it's not. The city has potential, and again since we have a new mayor that actually has something between his ears, things can go forward.

We have skins here..they claim sharp/socialist, but I'm kinda like looks like a a duck..quacks like a goth kid.......

So are you wearing bracers and boots, too? I've worn the Chelsea here (girl cut with pretty much a shaved head just some bangs/fringe in the front.) Was never a problem, but I do not dress skin (braces/boots) or socialist (same with red laces). Question here becomes how you carry yourself. No one will care too much about your hair unless you are chanting w.power or soemthing stupid.

The people that would give you crap for your hair cut will give you crap for the color of your skin before they ever notice your hair or lack of. Racists are everywhere and will always find the need to call you by your skin color. Ignore them and move away quickly just incase stupidity and ignorance is catching.

I started getting my hair done in a buzzcut late last year so I can have fewer haircuts and save some money!

I'm curious what you mean by this, as I have really been taken by the city in the time I've spent there and am giddy to finally be moving to Memphis....

I am aware of the sorts of things that some people say about the city, with respect to what some perceive as problems, but don't personally buy into them as anything that wouldn't be present in just about any city of its size. I am quite eager to become a part of the community for years to come.

Awesome. Welcome. Understand that some folks want you to buy into that negativity and self-loathing. RESIST!! lol...

Wow, I am looking for someplace to relocate and Memphis, or Nashville came to mind, even though I don't have any family or friends there. Now I'm afraid. I am from NYC and I am not white. I don't want to meander into the wrong part of town and wind up in the middle of a rally. So I should be on the look out for boots and suspenders? Particularly boots with red laces? Wow. And to think I was coming down for BBQ and Beale Street
