Is Elvis held in as high regard in Memphis as he is elsewhere in the world. Does Memphis look upon Elvis proudly or is he just kind of meh there? Other than for the tourists.

Hi. Was just in your fair city last week. Spent time in the city, Long Island and Brooklyn. Was there for a wedding, but took 2.5 days in Manhattan to eat and hang.

Elvis is different to different people. I, for one am proud to say Elvis is from Memphis and Graceland is the 2nd most visited home in America. Graceland attracts quite a large following from all around the globe. Some folks here don't give it a second thought. Guess it could be similar to any city who has a tourist destination. The folks who visit think it's awesome, the locals don't pay it much attention.

The thing about Graceland is that the neighborhood is neither nice nor centrally located. Very out of sight, out of mind. At least for me anyway. On average, older people in Memphis are mostly conservative and not so into rock and roll. And of course the kids are more interested in the flavor of the week. All that said, I'm sure there are hardcore elvis niche people out there. I've just never met them.

Here's an old thread on this subject://www.city-data.com/forum/memph...graceland.html

Fwiw, I have met at least one native Memphian who thought the Elvis thing was simply over-estimated by the locals.

Evidently the guy had no idea that Elvis is world frickin' famous. I kid you not.

Memphis seems to mostly define itself by a few things. They are Elvis & Graceland, BBQ, the blues, Beale Street and the MLK assassination site. I've heard some real good blues here and have had some pretty decent BBQ. I have not been to Graceland and don't plan to and find all of the Elvis memorabilia that is sold everywhere to be comical. Beale Street is ok but I go elsewhere for my entertainment / drinking as Beale can be a sewer of humanity at times. The MLK assassination site which I have only passed by appears to be very underwhelming.

However, besides all of these overhyped things, there are other things that I really like about Memphis. The midtown / Overton Square area is fantastic. There is a great zoo. There are some real nice parks as well.

Vandy, the problem is that you only passed by the MLK assassination site. Today, it's the National Civil Right Museum. It's actually very nice. Feel free to stop by some time. Graceland and Beale are major tourist traps. Stax is far and away the best music related attraction. There's not a big bar and nightlife culture in Memphis, but overton square and cooper/young are as good as it gets.
