Idelwild is very diverse and has a great deal of parental involvement. I would suggest doing some research and actually go to the schools to see which would fit your family the best. Not all public schools in Memphis are bad regardless of many of the comments.
Idlewild is a good school and Peabody is up and coming in their improvement. However, Snowden is hitting a bit rough patch in that it's value added rating is below average in all subjects other than science right now. Snowden's Optional program is still excellent, but of course, optional program does not equal entire school.

I congratulate you on volunteering in the schools; it is very much needed. I've worked in evaluating city schools for years and the overall state of the city school system is simply unacceptable.

My daughter attends Idlewild Elementary, this is her first year and she is in kindergarden. I LOVE IT so far! The principle is great and she has a great love for her job, the school and the children. She is wonderful! I am renting to, and am looking to move in the next year and I am going to 100% try to stay in this distric. It is also an optional school.

I know this is an old thread... but in case anyone comes upon it... my son is a new Kindergartner at Peabody Elementary in Cooper Young. We love it! The teachers and principal are dynamic! A number of Cooper Young parents are now sending their children to Peabody, so the rejuvinated neighborhood involvement will help it only get better. I have friends sending their children to Idlewild.. and they are happy.. also, have long heard wonderful things about Snowden Elementary. Elementary schools in Memphis are not the problem - even numerous good public junior high - it's H.S. that gets trickier. But I am hopeful MCS are on the upswing with the influx of money coming in through the Gates Foundation and Race to the Top.
