Did you miss this part? It's called comprehension.

I am enjoying Memphis more than I thought I would have. It has its positives and negatives.

I have 15 positives and 11 negatives - never counted them before this, just listed everything I could think of - so there was never any thought into giving pros or cons preference.

I never once said I didn't like Memphis or that the negatives outweighed the cons. I did say I am enjoying it more than I thought I would, which is largely because everything I read online was horribly negative.

At THIS point in time, in very few situations would I move. However, I do not plan to be here forever (this isn't Memphis' fault, I just want to try new places, and choose where I live instead of being placed somewhere like I was this time).

The general message of my viewpoint is this. Memphis has positives and negatives (leave the ratio up to Brigante). I think you can make yourself happy anywhere if you focus on the positives and seek them out (for instance, I really enjoy the grizzlies so I go to/watch as many games as I can. I really don't like the ghetto - so I don't drive around there).

It's simple, your appraisal of a city should be the power of the positives that you are able to experience minus the power of the negatives that you can't avoid. Using this method, Memphis comes out a net positive, for sure.

I very much appreciate what you have said here, especially the part I have made bold. I too moved moved to Memphis because I was placed in the city, and would say that my approach to living here is remarkably similar to the way you have described your own.

I truly have fallen in love with this city. Just like a human lover, though, Memphis has its blemishes; it just isn't the blemishes that have my attention.

I have a lot of the same interests and leanings, and, although I'm a few years older (28), I love it in Memphis. People are going to be negative about any place you go, and there are negatives to the city, but I'm not from here originally and I think of it as home.

your statement highlighted in bold is utter nonsense....yes I agree there might be "negatives" about many other cities, and conversely there are cities that might have much less "negatives".....but to suggest "people are going to BE negative in "any place you go" is wrong-headed. I have lived in, and visited large numbers of cities besides Memphis TN, and the propensity for "people" being "negative" in other cities fluctuates wildly on whether true "negatives" exist in those cities in the first place.

I've been in cities where true and solid negatives exist all around, and the citizens/people are too stupid to acknowledge the true negatives, or so blind they choose to ignore them, and worst, become irrationally defensive when others from the outside (or newcomers) offer up negative criticisms.

People's "behavior" does not necessarily positively correlate to the pure existence of real "negatives".

Admittingly, I have been drinking. But, this makes zero sense.
