Hi there,

My husband and I are a military couple .. moved to the Memphis area last year. We're interested in domestic adoption while we're here; specifically, we're looking to adopt a toddler, so it will most likely be a foster to adoption type of situation.

My question is with regards to homestudy options: I know we need one, but how to pick an agency to conduct one. Any thoughts or local experiences? Obviously, we don't want to pay thousands of dollars for a homestudy, or any other fees when we aren't looking to adopt an infant. We just want to contract with an agency to perform the homestudy and provide the report.

Thanks in advance!!

Hi there! A couple of options... Since you aren't interested in adopting an infant, you can relatively easily adopt through TN DCS and there should be minimal fees since the state usually picks up court costs. Adopting through the state would be the most cost-effective. Private adoptions that necessitate a family lawyer to draw up papers and international adoptions are the most expensive.

Options include Jewish Family Services, Agape Child and Family Services, Catholic Charities and Bethany Christian Services in West TN. You do not have to be affiliated with any particular religious group to use these agencies. They can provide home studies and related documentation. All are reputable and have good services. I know that Agape uses a sliding scale kind of fee structure based on income for their services, but I am not sure about the others. Best wishes!

Absolutely! In addition, I spoke with a friend who is an adoption case worker yesterday, and she recommended Bethany. The others tend to be slower with the process right now, and Bethany would be able to do it quicker since they have a few more home study consultants than the others. =)

Reviews can be misleading since they tend to be more extreme for good or ill. I would check them out and see for yourself. =)

Agreed! It's a moot point; they don't do what we're looking for as per my email conversations with them. Thank you so much for the recommendation!

Anyone else out there have recommendations?
