Hey guys I just relocated to memphis and got a job and I am 25 years old andi have been staying in a hotel downtown til i found me a nice apt to rent in a safe neighborhood. So i was wondering if anyone could tell me how downtown living is? I also have some apartments that I have checked out online and wondering if anyone could give me some feedback on them. They are the following The Renissance apts, metro apts downtown, Mud Island. I was also trying to see which areas should i stay out of that are extremely dangerous. Any feedback would be helpful im just curious about memphis since according to online it has a bad crime rate.

Downtown (including Mud Island) is quite safe. It's one of the safest neighborhoods in the city.

If downtown is your preference you're fine. If you're looking for something in a specific budget or area of the city lots of people here can help, just provide some details...

paul ryburn does a really good blog on downtown living and events. (google his name) he lives in one of the downtown highrise apt buildings and has for probable a decade. you could probably email him your questions and he could help. also, since you live downtown now, you might as well read his daily blog about food and beverage specials in the downtown area.

oh, and he doesn't work downtown, he just prefers to live there. that is a pretty good recommendation for safety and quality of life!

Mud Island is nice, but it feels more like an upscale suburb than a big city. Nothing wrong with that, but, to me it seems different and seperate from downtown. Both are as safe as anywhere. Just don't go wandering north of Chelsea or south of Crump. North and South Memphis are not where you want to be. My biggest hesitation to living downtown would be lack of a large supermarket and Target. West Memphis has a WalMart, but it's not glamorous. I don't know much about specific apts downtown, but it doesn't hurt to ask residents if you see people outside them. They'll know better than anybody else how the apts are.

Downtown is nice, I'm partial to Midtown, especially if you live here and you can drive around and look, and East Memphis is good too. It depends really on what part of Memphis you work on and how long of a commute you want, and the type of neighborhood you want to be in. You can be safe in a lot of places in Memphis though.

I live downtown and love it (turning 25 in a month). Live downtown and love it too! More than safe, no worries there. Please PM me for any questions - we seem to be in similar situations!

Good luck!

Downtown can be great fun. Metro 67 is a nice place from I've seen and heard, and The Renaissance is a true bargain (if you ask me).
