We are moving to Memphis next month. My husband will be working at the navy base in Millington and we will be staying at a hotel near by for the first two weeks. But we need to find a temporary residence / apartment / extended stay hotel until we purchase a house (probably in Arlington) - expecting to be for 3 to 6 months. Any suggestion for a temp residence / apartment / extended stay type hotel in the area (with a kitchenette and a safe parking space) ?

We found several Extended Stay America in 5885 Shelby Oaks Dr.Memphis, TN 38134; 6085 Apple Tree Dr., Memphis, TN 38115; 6520 Mt. Moriah Rd., Memphis, TN 38115; 2520 Horizon Lake Drive, Memphis, TN 38133; and 8110 Cordova Centre Dr., Memphis, TN 38016. Has anybody stayed there before? Are the areas safe for a family with 5 years old child?

We also found ValuePlace at 5787 Shelby Oaks Drive, Memphis, TN 38134 and 7060 Riverdale Bend Rd, Memphis, TN 38125. Has anybody stayed there before? Any safety issues in the areas?

Thank you!

Welcome to the area! Of those options, I would look at the ones closer to the Wolfchase Mall on Horizon Lake Drive or Cordova Centre Drive. It's a busy part of the city, but it is safe. I don't think I would recommend the other ones especially if you have a small child. Shelby Oaks Drive is not the best part of town, generally.

You might also want to check out militarybyowner.com for short term rentals. Best wishes!

Are you looking for an apartment or somewhere already furnished?

None of those Extended Stay places are wonderful, but the ones at 6500 Poplar and 6325 Quail Hollow (same neighborhood) are in a much better area than some of the others you listed. I absolutely wouldn't even consider anywhere in 38115 zip code.

Shelby Oaks isn't a bad area - ckdub may be confusing it with Shelby Drive. It's right off I-40 two exits west of Wolfchase. Cordova Centre and Horizon Lakes are both in the Wolfchase Galleria area. Cordova Centre is just south of Wolfchase at Dexter Road. All of those areas are fine as far as safety. They are all in retail/office/commercial areas - and all would be quite a bit closer to Millington than the ones in the Poplar Ave area.

You might find the one on Cordova Centre very convenient. There are several places to eat within a very, very short walk. Kroger is right across the street for groceries (although it IS a busy 6-lane street!). Your 5-year old will like the fact that it's less than a block from Chucky Cheese

The ones on Shelby Oaks are in a less busy area if that's important to you...

gotigersgo - Thank you for your message. We are looking for a furnished place with a minimum furniture as such bed, kitchenette, tv, small dining table and chairs.

eastmemphisguy - Thank you for your advice. Would you explain why the 38115 zip code should be avoided? We have never been to Memphis or even to TN before, so we have absolutely no idea how things are...Does the 38115 zip code area have higher crime rates?

JoeCartpath - Thank you for your info! Being close to shops sounds very convenient. Our son was born overseas, so he has never been to the Chucky Cheese before. We will definitely check it out

JoeCartpath, I used to work over on Shelby Oaks Drive, so I am familiar with it. It's definitely not the worst part of town, but it isn't the best either. I was just saying that between the Wolfchase area and Shelby Oaks area, I would select the Wolfchase area safety-wise. =)
